Powys Heritage is a simple attempt to bring together information about the county in one place.
The starting point was practical. Much of what exists on Powys is either scattered across different sources or presented in ways that are not always easy to follow. Some places are well covered, others much less so. Even where information is available, it is not always consistent.
This site sets out to address that in a straightforward way.
Approach
The focus is on setting out material clearly, without adding unnecessary layers. The emphasis is on written content rather than images or features. Each section is intended to be readable on its own, but also to connect with others where appropriate.
The aim is not to produce a definitive account. That would not be realistic, given the county’s scale and the variation across different areas. Instead, the intention is to provide a reliable starting point, from which further detail can be explored if needed.
Where possible, information is based on established sources. Where it is less certain, it is treated more cautiously.
Scope
The site covers the historic and administrative county of Powys, including its towns, villages and wider landscape.
This includes:
- General historical context
- Individual settlements
- Landscape and land use
- Buildings and sites
- Cultural and linguistic elements
Not every place can be covered in equal depth, and the level of detail will vary. The structure is designed to allow additional material to be added over time, where it is useful to do so.
Relationship to the Landscape
A consistent thread across the site is the relationship between people and landscape. This is not treated as a separate topic, but as something that runs through all sections.
Understanding a settlement, a building, or a route often depends on where it sits and how it connects to what lies around it. For that reason, the site tends to move between place and context, rather than separating them entirely.
Use of the Site
The site is intended to be used as a reference rather than read in sequence. Individual sections can be approached independently, depending on what you are looking for.
It may be useful for:
- General background on an area
- Understanding how different places relate to each other
- Identifying sites or features within the landscape
It is not designed as a practical guide, and it does not replace more detailed or specialist sources.
Development
The content has been developed over time, drawing on a combination of published material, mapping and site-based observation.
It is not updated frequently, but it is not fixed. Where there is a clear need to revise or add material, this will be done.
The structure is intended to remain stable, so that the site can continue to function as a consistent reference.
Cambria Sports Culture CIC
Powys Heritage has been developed as part of the wider work of Cambria Sports Culture CIC.
The organisation’s focus is on landscape, access and community engagement across Wales. While much of that work is practical, this site reflects a different aspect of it — bringing together background material to support a clearer understanding of place.
A Working Resource
This is not a finished record. It reflects what can be brought together at this point, and it remains open to revision where necessary.
