Military use of land in Powys has been limited in visibility, but not in extent.
The most significant area is the training ground at Sennybridge, which occupies a large section of land within the Brecon Beacons. This area is used for exercises and has influenced how the surrounding land is accessed.
Unlike other forms of development, military use has not led to permanent built expansion across the site. Instead, it has preserved certain areas in a relatively open state, though with restricted access at times.
Elsewhere, military presence has been more temporary or less visible. Camps, routes and training activity have left fewer lasting marks, though they form part of the county’s more recent history.
The relationship between military use and landscape is not always straightforward. In some cases, it limits access. In others, it has prevented more intensive development.
