Not all landscapes in Powys are entirely natural or agricultural. Some have been shaped deliberately, though often in ways that are not immediately obvious.
Estate landscapes provide the clearest examples. Tree planting, avenues and managed views were introduced to create a particular effect. These elements can still be traced, even where the original estate has changed.
Gardens, particularly those associated with larger houses, reflect similar intentions. Their layout, planting and boundaries were designed rather than left to develop naturally.
Powis Castle is one of the more visible examples, where the gardens form a distinct feature in their own right. Elsewhere, the design is less formal but still present.
Over time, these landscapes have blended into their surroundings. What was once planned may now appear established, though the underlying structure remains.
